When I was a kid, I saw a movie, probably made in the late fifties or early sixties, probably British, filmed in gritty black-and-white. It was about a man who is released from prison for kidnapping and is now reformed. He is living a normal life when his own daughter is kidnapped by a criminal gang (why, I don't know). The final scene takes place in a city street where the gang are to hand over the girl, surrounded by hidden policemen. When the ex-kidnapper runs to collect her, one of the policemen who knows his past, but not that the girl is his daughter, thinks he is one of the villains and shoots him dead. A tragic irony.
I have remembered this for decades(!) and have no idea what it is. If you can tell me, I'll buy you a beer next time I'm in Paris.

But I don't think it's your movie. Maybe try to find it on Imdb by keywords I looked there: http://www.imdb.com/find?s=kw&q=kidnapper

Thanks for looking, Vince. I've asked a few walking film encyclopedias about this film over the years and it didn't talk to them, either. It's probably better to leave it an obscure memory. Like the saxophone player in "Lost Highway", I like to remember things my own way, not necessarily the way they happened. :)
